RC Cola Bottles Hoarded By Competitor Dealers
January 22, 2008

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) recovered 91,000 empty softdrink bottles, estimated at more than P1 million, from three warehouses in the northern part of Metro Manila and Bulacan.

NBI supervising Agent Irven Garcia, executive officer of NBI-Intelligence Special Operations Division (ISOD), said they raided the Sir Ralcue Enterprises, owned by Raul de Quiroz Cuenca, in Dagat-Dagatan, Caloocan City; the Evangelista RVL Commercial, in Meycauayan, Bulacan; and its branch Coke Exclusive Depot, in Malinta, Valenzuela City.

The three warehouses are reportedly owned by Ramon Evangelista, Virgilio Evangelista and Lito Evangelista.

The NBI-ISOD said it acted on a complaint filed by Asiawide Refreshments Corp., the manufacturer of RC Cola and Zesto Fruit Soda, sometime last December.

NBI Deputy Director for Intelligence Service Ruel Lasala said they secured three search warrants from Executive Judge Reynaldo Ros of Manila City Regional Trial Court (MCRTC) Branch 33 after they confirmed that the three establishments hoarded empty RC Cola and Zesto Fruit Soda bottles.

“Asiawide received reports that the bottles containing RC Cola were being hoarded by several dealers… The three subjects are all exclusive Coca Cola dealers,” Lasala said.

“We would still have to conduct further investigation. We want to find out why the dealers were hoarding the bottles and if Coca Cola or the sari-sari stores in these areas have any involvement,” he added.

The dealers reportedly started illegally storing the glass containers since 2006. “Since then the complainant said they began to notice that the number of their bottles started to decrease,” Lasala said.

A representative of Asiawide told the NBI-ISOD that their losses have reached millions due to the shortage of bottles, which the firm has import.

The NBI is planning to file charges of unfair competition against the owners of the establishments.
