P89 Million Worth of Lacoste Goods Seized in Binondo
September 29, 2008

An estimated P89 million worth of counterfeit Lacoste goods were recently confiscated in Binondo, Manila. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Intelligence Special Operations Divisions (ISOD) conducted two raids in Juan Luna Plaza and 168 Mall. The raids yielded more than 22, 345 pieces of fake Lacoste apparel.

The NBI-ISOD received information from Bengzon Negre Untalan Intellectual Property Attorneys (BNU), the counsel and attorney-in-fact of Lacoste S.A. in the Philippines. BNU had hired Dydimus, a market research company, to conduct the initial investigation on illegal activities of the raided locations.

After receiving a tip-off from BNU, NBI-ISOD put the establishments under surveillance to confirm the information received. Test buys were also carried out in order to verify the initial investigations and to support the NBI’s applications for search warrants against the stores.

Upon acquiring search warrants from the Manila Regional Trial Court, the NBI-ISOD searched the establishments and confiscated the counterfeit goods.

The owners of the stalls and establishments raided would be charged for the violation of R.A. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.
