Online Piracy on the Rise
February 06, 2008

All over the world, unauthorized reproduction of copyrighted content through file sharing and peer-to-peer networks are sharply on the rise. A case in point is The Pirate Bay, an Internet file-sharing service, the scourge of movie and music industries.

Swedish prosecutors have recently targeted The Pirate Bay and charges against 4 people were filed for aiding illegal online copying of intellectual property.

Eric Garland, chief executive of BigChampagne Online Media measurement, a company which tracks digital traffic said, “There are more people availing themselves of free intellectual property than at any time in history. The content companies could knock out tens of Pirate bays, and they will still face the same problem.”

The movie and music industries have, in recent history, won a series of legal battles against online file-sharing services such as Napster, Grokster, Morpheus, and Kazaa. Some of these businesses were shut down, while others reinvented themselves as legitimate businesses.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) estimated that in 2005, online piracy cost the industry $7.1 billion in lost consumer spending on movies. Figures for 2007 are still being compiled, but a spokeswoman said the new numbers would show an increase.

“The investigation into The Pirate Bay by Swedish authorities has been extensive and we are happy to rely on the judicial process to reach a just decision in this case,” said the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the international counterpart of the MPAA.

The music industry also saw a 10 percent drop in sales of recorded music last year according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). The organization estimates that for every legitimate paid-for digital download, 20 songs are downloaded illegally.

Meanwhile, even after the charges were filed last week, The Pirate Bay remained openly defiant, and still very much in operation. In place of its logo of a pirate galleon with a full sail, the site now shows an island labeling places like “Grave of MPAA” and “Lawyer’s Gallow.”
